While playing poker with friends, at the casino, or even online it is important to remember the positioning that occurs through the game and begins to learn to relate this positioning with the decisions that are made within each of the hands. The truth is that position is one of the most important aspects of poker and must be adhered to at all times, taking into account position when making a move on the poker table.
Position refers to the best position which is available at the poker table at any given time (keep in mind that this position changes with each hand as the position of the dealer changes). The best position to be in while playing poker is the last to act, the person that can decide the fate of the round. This person is seated before the dealer.
Since last to act and before the dealer is the best position to be in – is there a worst position that is considered a terrible place to play? One of the worst positions in which a player can be in through the game of poker is the first to act, or being in the position of small to big blinds. Although you can make a move, the entire table has the chance to act before it comes back to you to determine if you are going to fold or call in the case that a player has chosen to raise the bet. This position is hated by poker experts and therefore can make or break your game if you do not take position into account.
Being in a favorable position, being the last to act can create a positive experience and therefore many players choose to play cards in this position that they may not have played in a different position as the player can even have the power to control the pot size at the end of the round.
